Giant’s Causeway Tour
Giant’s Causeway, the UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site, was first documented in 1693 and has been a tourist attraction ever since. 60 million years ago during a period of intense volcanic activity, the Antrim Plateau was created and magma cooled quickly as it met the sea forming more than 40,000 hexagonal, octagonal and other columns. Myth attributes the causeway to the giant Finn MacCool who built it as an access route across to Scotland to fight with a rival giant. Similar geological features also exist on the Scottish island of Staffa.
Fun Fact: Northern Ireland’s Antrim coast is one of the most scenic drives in Europe. Its stunning landscapes were recognised by the makers of Game of Thrones, who used the area extensively as one of their filming locations.
Indulge your inner Indiana Jones at the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge just outside Ballintoy. As the bridge is suspended 30 metres (98 feet) above the sea, this is not for the faint of heart. But not to worry, there are still beautiful sights to see on solid ground.
The bridge spans 20 metres (66 feet) and connects the mainland to the tiny island of Carrick-a-Rede. Salmon fishermen constructed the first version of the bridge in 1755.
The Old Bushmills Distillery is the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world, having received its license to distill in 1608. Distilling traditions in the surrounding environs date back to 1276. The Old Bushmills Distillery is devoted to the production of Single Malt Irish Whiskey. The great tradition and craftsmanship first established in 1608 has been handed down over generations and conserved to this very day. As a result, there have been very few changes in how Single Malt Irish Whiskey is made today. An exceptional aspect of The Old Bushmills Distillery is the fact that distilling, blending, maturation and bottling are all carried out under one roof. Self-sufficiency and in-house expertise in triple distillation and maturation are the critical factors in the quality and complexity of the Bushmills family of whiskeys.
